ART DEGREES AND CERTIFICATES

Room to grow

With average hourly wages of $40.66 and annual income around $80,000, the software design and animation field is expected to offer a widening variety of lucrative job opportunities for years to come. Since 1990, the software publishing industry has more than doubled and is expected to grow by another 32 percent from 2006-2016. The number of employed multi-media artists and animators is likewise expected to increase by 32 percent in the same timeframe. (Source: U.S. Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics, www.bls.gov)If you’re looking for training beyond an associate’s degree, you’re in luck. With one of the most respected artistic programs in northern Michigan, Kirtland Community College also boasts a strong transfer program with the College of Creative Studies in Detroit and the Kendall College of Art and Design in Grand Rapids, the state’s top artistic institutions. In fact, Kirtland graduates have become a sought-after commodity at CCS and Kendall, earning a total of about $150,000 in scholarships each year. In recent years, Kirtland graduates have also earned scholarships to continue their education and training at CCS and Kendall.

As Kirtland graduates move on to further training, they enter those programs better prepared, with more advanced portfolios than many of their colleagues who have already graduated from bachelor’s degree programs.

Some of the courses you’ll take:

  • Introduction to Design
  • Fundamentals of Drawing
  • Photography
  •  Comic Book Illustration
  • Computer-generated Images
  • Computer Animation

  • Internet & Web Page Development
  • Web Animation & Multi-media

Creativity abounds

Kirtland offers a level of creativity and collaboration you might not expect to find in northern Michigan. With instructors who have the knowledge, insight and contacts to know what’s going on in the industry, Kirtland’s artistic programs are known for their open and cooperative atmosphere. Faculty and students, alike, openly communicate and work together, inspiring each other while developing their own individual skills and fostering new friendships and working relationships. As Kirtland instructors expect only the best work from themselves, they also inspire their students never to settle for good work, and instead strive to create great work.

A future of your own design

With an Animation & Game Design degree, you will have the ability to turn your dreams into reality. Animators don’t just make Saturday morning cartoons anymore. And with technological advances, you don’t need natural drawing ability to find your niche. Movie and television studios, computer software firms, video game developers, advertising agencies, and private and Web-based businesses all make use of computer animators and designers in today’s increasingly Internet- and entertainment-based world.Whether you’d like to become the next George Lucas or Steven Spielberg, or you want to design the next big video game sensation, Kirtland’s Animation & Game Design program is the place to begin your exciting career.
