Classical trio brings innovative style to KCPA

ROSCOMMON – A family trio that features a fresh and innovative take on classical music, one that is dissolving barriers between art forms, will take center stage at the Kirtland Center for the Performing Arts for three performances Friday and Saturday, Nov. 13-14.

The Ahn Trio – sisters Maria (cello), Lucia (piano) and Angella (violin) – will be perform two shows for the Kirtland Youth Theatre program, at 10:30 a.m. and 1 p.m., on Friday, Nov. 13, at the KCPA, located on the main campus of Kirtland Community College near Roscommon. They will again perform take the stage at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 14, as part of the KCPA’s Performing Artist Series.

The Ahn sisters are credited with helping to redefine the art and architecture of chamber music, breathing new life into the standard piano trio literature with commissioned works from visionary composers such as Pat Metheny, Kenji Bunch, Maurice Jarre, Nikolai Kapustin, Mark O’Connor and Michael Nyman.

The classical trio has fused their work with that of dancers, pop singers, DJs, electronic music artists, painters, installation artists, photographers, lighting designers, ecologists and even kite-makers, and received critical acclaim for their collaborative project with the David Parsons Dance Company in the past. It is precisely this vitality and commitment to innovation that has The Ahn Trio continually drawing new audiences to classical music.

Born in Seoul, South Korea, and educated at Juilliard in New York City, the members of the Ahn Trio’s latest CD, “Lullaby for My Favorite Insomniac,” which was recorded by their own label, L.A.M.P., made it to No.8 on the billboard charts here in the U.S. and the special edition release is now available on RCA Red Seal label.

And the Ahns were excited to announce that they recently signed a multi-album, exclusive recording artist contract with SonyBMG International.

Ticket prices for the two shows on Nov. 13 are $5 for adults and $3 for students, while prices for the Nov. 14 performance are $28 and $26. Senior, student, family and group discounts are available.

The Children’s Learning Center, also located on the Kirtland campus, will be open from 6:30 p.m. till the end of the show to provide child care services – $5 for one child or $15 per family. Free shuttle service from the parking lot to the main lobby doors is also available before and after the program.
