Kirtland’s Lady Firebirds defeat Macomb

ROSCOMMON – Nynne Larsen, a Kirtland freshman from Denmark, shot 11 for 15 from the floor to lead the Lady Firebirds to a 77-59 win over Macomb Community College at the CRAF Center in Roscommon on Wednesday, Jan. 26. Larsen dropped in 23 points and added 3 steals to one of the best games she’s had since being injured earlier in the season.

The win boosted the Lady Firebirds to 3-5 in the MCCAA Eastern Conference (6-15 overall), which keeps them about in the middle of the pack with eight conference games left on the schedule.

Kirtland coach Teresa Stuck is confident her conference opponents will be surprised by the difference they’ll see in her team’s level of play during the last half of the conference schedule.

“They’re a different team than they were even three weeks ago,” Stuck said. “It feels good to have two conference wins in a row, but better yet, it’s good to see them gelling as a team.

“On offense they’re starting to read each other and on defense they’re acting more on instinct.”

Sophomore Kenzie Steward, from Alma, added 16 points to the Firebirds’ game on Wednesday, as well as 4 assists and 5 rebounds. Amanda Cooper, a sophomore from Harrison, aided with a double-double – 12 rebounds and 11 points.

Two freshmen, Casey Burrows and Felon Harris, had all-around good games. Harris had 7 points, 5 steals and 8 assists, while Burrows added 7 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 steals.

“They’re just all playing so well,” Stuck said.

Firebirds fans have another chance to catch the team in action when they host Wayne County Community College at home in the CRAF Center on Saturday, Jan. 29 (game time 1 p.m.). The Firebirds then take to the road for a Feb. 2 game at Oakland Community College before returning for a string of three home games on Feb. 5, 9 and 12. Admission to home games is free.
