Kirtland Firebirds fall to Wayne
|
ROSCOMMON – After being ahead for
most of their game against the Wayne County Community College Wildcats,
Kirtland’s Firebirds took a disappointing 71-66 loss in men’s basketball
action at the CRAF Center on Saturday, Jan. 29.
Bernard Daniels led the Firebirds’ scoring drive with 19 points,
followed by Frank Washington with 16 and David Allison with 14. Under
the basket, Craig Ash pulled in 11 rebounds.
Top scorer for the Wildcats was Richard Henderson with 22.
The loss dropped the Firebirds to 5-3 in the MCCAA’s Eastern Conference
(15-7 overall), which is enough for third place, but just barely, with
Wayne CCC biting at their heels in fourth place at 4-4.
“We’re going to have to make a comeback and rectify this situation in
the remainder of the season in order to stay in third,” said
disappointed Kirtland men’s coach Glen Donahue.
First place in the conference is currently filled by Mott Community
College with a conference record of 8-0. Henry Ford CC is in second at
6-1. Therefore, third is probably all the Firebirds can hope for this
year. Adding to the drama, the Firebirds have only one chance to prove
themselves against Henry Ford this season - when they host the team
Saturday, Feb. 5, at the CRAF Center. First-place Mott will have the
home court advantage when they host the Firebirds Feb. 16.
The Firebirds take to the road first, traveling to Detroit to face
Oakland Community College on Wednesday, Feb. 2, then are back at the
CRAF Center to face Henry Ford CC on Saturday with a game time of 3 p.m.
Admission is free. |
