Firebirds lose to second-place Henry Ford

ROSCOMMON – It’s been a disappointing week for Kirtland Firebirds fans; the men’s basketball team took its third straight loss Saturday, at the CRAF Center in Roscommon, losing 91-86 to the conference’s second-place team, Henry Ford Community College.

Kirtland exhibited the depth of its bench Saturday, however, with five Firebirds ending the match in double digits. David Allison knocked in 18 points to lead the Firebirds in scoring, and came away with 6 rebounds.

Demarvelous Carter and Craig Ash both sank 15 points, while Ash led the Firebirds in rebounds with 9. Frank Washington and Bernard Daniels rounded out the top scores with 12 points each, adding 5 and 7 assists, respectively. Sherman Yarbrough played tough, adding 7 rebounds.

“It was a tough ball game,” said Kirtland coach Glen Donahue, “and an even tougher game to lose.”

The loss puts the Firebirds in a three-way battle for third place in the MCCAA Eastern Conference with a 5-5 record, along with St. Clair County CC and Wayne County CC. Henry Ford CC moved to 7-2, while Mott CC remains undefeated with a 9-0 record.

With five games left on the conference schedule, Donahue is hoping to keep his team motivated toward winning the March 4 opening of the NJCAA regional tournament that will pit the Firebirds against Vincennes University (Indiana), in Roscommon.

“That’s the key game now,” Donahue said. “Everything we do now will be in preparation for beating Vincennes.”

That preparation begins Wednesday, Feb. 9, when the Firebirds host Delta College (4-5). The women’s game begins at 5:30 p.m. at the CRAF Center, with the men’s game following at 7:30 p.m.

Kirtland will host its last home game of the season Saturday, Feb. 12, when St. Clair County CC comes to Roscommon. Game times are 1 p.m. (women) and 3 p.m. Admission is free.
