Kirtland Firebirds revenge prior loss to Delta
Donahue tallies 600th college win

ROSCOMMON – Sherman Yarbrough, a
6’8” center from Ypsilanti, had one of his best games ever on Wednesday,
Feb. 9, helping his Kirtland Firebirds to a 91-85 win at home over Delta
College in Michigan Community College Athletic Association action. The
win avenged Kirtland’s one-point loss to Delta just one month ago.
It also went in the record books as the 600th college career win for
Glen Donahue, Kirtland’s men’s basketball coach and athletic director.
Donahue has for years held the title of the winningest coach in Michigan
college basketball history. The win over Delta was his 726th career win
if his years in high school coaching are added.
Happy to play his part, Yarbrough sank 16 points, grabbed 12 rebounds
and blocked 3 shots to help Kirtland toward the victory, which saw four
additional Firebirds in double digits. David Allison, from Lapeer, led
Kirtland in scoring with 21 points, adding 5 assists. A sophomore from
Boyne Falls, Mike Dunlop, added 14 points, while Bernard Daniels and
Frank Washington, both freshmen from Detroit, added 12 and 11 points,
respectively.
The win keeps Kirtland in a tie with Wayne County CC for third place in
the MCCAA Eastern Conference with a 6-5 record (16-9 overall). Mott CC
(10-0) leads the conference, followed by Henry Ford CC (7-2).
The Firebirds host 5-6 St. Clair County CC on Saturday, Feb. 12, then
finish the season on the road against Mott (Feb. 16), Alpena (Feb. 19)
and Macomb (Feb. 22). |
