ROSCOMMON – Harrison native Amanda
Cooper hit 25 points and fed her teammates 4 assists to help boost the
Kirtland Lady Firebirds to an 85-72 win over Delta College on Wednesday,
Feb. 9, in the CRAF Center in Roscommon.
The win was Kirtland’s fifth out of their last six matchups and brings
them into a two-way tie for fifth place in the MCCAA Eastern Conference
with a 6-6 record (9-16 overall). Delta is now tied with Alpena
Community College with a 5-7 record for the next slot in the lineup.
Kirtland had a rough first half shooting against Delta, before stepping
up their game on the defensive side and thwarting attempts at the
opposing basket.
“There were Firebirds everywhere,” said Kirtland coach Teresa Stuck
about her team’s second-half defensive push. “I simply told them that
defense was going to win us the game as our shots just weren’t falling.
They made the decision to make it happen.”
In addition to Cooper’s performance, Nynne Larsen, from Denmark, stood
out with 20 points and 4 assists, and Kenzie Steward (Alma) had a
stellar night with 17 points, 15 rebounds and 4 assists. Point guard
Felon Harris, from Toronto, kept the ball moving with 8 rebounds, 4
assists, 4 steals and 7 points.
The Lady Firebirds play their last home game of the season Saturday,
Feb. 12, at the CRAF Center, hosting third-place St. Clair County CC.
They’ll finish the season’s last three games on the road, traveling to
Mott CC on Wednesday, Feb. 16; to Alpena on Saturday, Feb. 19; and to
Macomb CC on Tuesday, Feb. 22. |
