Kirtland’s golf team to swing under new leader
|
ROSCOMMON – Ken McClusky, an avid
golfer from Gladwin, has been hired to coach the Kirtland Community
College golf team which is entering its fifth season of play in the
Michigan Community College Athletic Association this spring.
McClusky said he has been golfing for more than 30 years, with The Dream
in West Branch being his most common destination of late. He also works
in the golf industry, as a salesman for a golf supply company.
The new coach played on the Lapeer West golf team throughout his high
school years and has played in and won at state-level tournaments in the
past. This will be McClusky’s first venture as a coach, but he said he
is looking forward to the challenge.
“I’ll start by recruiting players,” McClusky said. Practices will get
under way around mid-March, or whenever the driving ranges are free of
snow, then they’ll begin play within the MCCAA, with the Firebirds’ home
course being The Quest in Houghton Lake.
Since the team’s inception in 2001, the Firebirds’ have been playing
under the professionally honed eye of former coach Mike Glover of
Roscommon. Under Glover, one Kirtland golfer, Mike Mieske, of Houghton
Lake, made two trips (2002, 2004) to the National Junior College
Athletic Association golf championships. Kirtland has yet to field a
highly competitive team, however. |
