Kirtland’s Lady Firebirds lose to undefeated Mott
|
ROSCOMMON – Kirtland’s Meghan
Bastian, a freshman from Hale, led her Lady Firebirds in scoring
Wednesday, Feb. 16, dropping in 16 points in her team’s 80-66 road loss
to undefeated Mott Community College.
At 14-0 (19-4 overall), Mott has clinched the MCCAA Eastern Conference
title, but there is still quite of bit of jockeying going on for the
second- and third-place spots, with Kirtland still in the game for third
with a 7-7 record (10-17 overall). With only two games left on the
conference schedule, however, there’s not much room to wiggle – and no
room to lose.
Kirtland coach Teresa Stuck has been upbeat about her team’s improvement
in the second half of the season, but Mott was a looming dark hole in
their path.
“We just didn’t play well enough to beat a very good team,” Stuck said.
“When you’re playing a team that has that many weapons, you have to have
the little bit of extra concentration to do the little things every
time. We just couldn’t get over that hump tonight; we struggled to
really score when we had to.”
Bastian was in the game, despite the pressure, and added 6 rebounds to
her scoring statistic. Amanda Cooper, from Harrison, added 14 points and
Nynne Larsen, from Denmark, was good for 11 points. The Firebirds’ key
ball handler, Felon Harris from Toronto, helped with 10 assists, 7
points and 2 steals.
The Firebirds finish their season on the road, traveling to Alpena on
Saturday, Feb. 19, then to Macomb on Tuesday, Feb. 22. Delta College
will host the regional tournament March 3-6. |
