Kirtland Firebirds trounced by undefeated Mott
|
ROSCOMMON – If there was ever to be
a good game for Kirtland’s second-leading scorer Frank Washington to be
out with an injury, the Firebirds’ Wednesday road game against
undefeated Mott Community College wasn’t it. The Firebirds (7-6 MCCAA
Eastern Conference, 17-10 overall) took a 101-71 beating at the hands of
Mott, which has clinched the conference title with a 13-0 record (24-2
overall).
The Firebirds’ leading scorer this season, Bernard Daniels, once again
led the team scoring statistic with 25 points against Mott. Despite
nailing only 25 percent from the floor, Daniels hit 5 for 5 from the
free throw line and four from behind the three-point arc.
Seven more Firebirds filled in at the basket, with David Allison adding
10 points, and Craig Ash contributing 7 points and 9 assists. Adam
Reese, Lauren Oberle, DeMarvelous Carter and Sherman Yarbrough each
added 6 points and Mike Dunlop rounded out the scoring with 5.
With the loss, the Firebirds said goodbye to their chance at a
second-place conference finish and the chance to enter the state
tournament. They’ll continue on the road in a race for third, with their
final regular season games in Alpena on Saturday, Feb. 19, and at Macomb
on Tuesday, Feb. 22.
Kirtland plays host to Vincennes for the opening of the regional
tournament Friday, March 4, at the CRAF Center in Roscommon. |
