Lady Firebirds hit triple digits, defeat Alpena
|
ROSCOMMON – Saturday’s shootout
with Alpena Community College was a game of firsts for Kirtland’s Lady
Firebirds. At the top of that list was the score; for the first time in
the program’s history, the women’s basketball team scored in triple
digits, defeating Alpena 103-73.
The win was also the first road win for the Firebirds since their
conference schedule began 15 games ago. The win boosted Kirtland to 8-7
in the Michigan Community College Athletic Association’s Eastern
Conference (11-17 overall), with only one conference game left on the
schedule.
After getting off to a slow start against Alpena, the Lady Firebirds
went on a 17-0 scoring run and never looked back.
“We really flew like a Firebird flock tonight,” said coach Teresa Stuck.
“Everyone contributed.”
Even though both teams connected on 10 three-point shots, the Firebirds’
offense was clearly the more mature.
“Offensively we moved the ball very well and had a team assist/turnover
ratio of 2-to-1,” Stuck said.
Every Firebird found her way into the scoring column with five in double
figures and two more with 9 points each. Amanda Cooper, one of the
Firebirds’ consistent top scorers, had a team-high 24 points against
Alpena, along with 6 rebounds and 4 assists.
Other Firebirds statistics included: Nynne Larsen, 15 points, 5
rebounds, 4 assists and 6 steals; Casey Burrows, 14 points, 6 rebounds
and 5 assists; Felon Harris, 13 points, 8 assist, 6 rebounds, 3 steals
and 0 turnovers; Kenzie Steward, 10 points; Meghan Bastian and Ashley
Andrews, 9 points each.
Emilee Bruner, of Mio, also did a great job defensively on one of the
strongest posts in the conference.
The Lady Firebirds will try to double their road-win statistic Tuesday,
Feb. 22, when they travel to Macomb Community College (2-13) for their
last conference game of the season, likely finishing with a fifth seed.
They’ll have more than a week to prepare for the Regional tournament
that begins March 3, hosted by Delta College, near Bay City. |
