ROSCOMMON – Members of Kirtland’s
women’s and men’s basketball teams who earned team and league honors were
given many rounds of applause during the annual Firebirds Winter Sports
Banquet, hosted Sunday, March 20, in the Kirtland Student Center.
First-year women’s coach Teresa Stuck noted that four of her team members
received All-Conference honors during the Kirtland Lady Firebird’s first
winning season (9-7 in the Michigan Community College Athletic Association
East; 12-17 overall) in the team’s five-year history.
Honorees were Amanda Cooper of Harrison who was named a Third Team
All-Conference player; and Kenzie Steward (Alma), Felon Harris (Toronto,
Ontario) and Nynne Larsen (Denmark) who all received All-Conference
Honorable Mention honors.
Harris also won her team’s vote to receive the Most Valuable Player award.
Other team-chosen awards went to Larsen as Defensive Player of the Year;
Cooper received the Hustle Award; and Meghan Bastian of Hale earned Most
Improved honors.
Men’s coach and Kirtland’s Athletic Director Glen Donahue passed out
All-League and All-Freshman Team honors to Bernard Daniels of Detroit.
Daniels led the Firebirds in scoring with 464 points this season.
Frank Washington of Detroit and Craig Ash of Pontiac received All-Region
honors. Ash was also ranked 19th in the National Junior College Athletic
Association for his rebound average of nine per game.
Members of the men’s team also voted for their teammates to receive the
following awards: Ash earned Defensive Player of the Year honors; David
Allison of Lapeer earned the Hustle Award; Mike Dunlop of Boyne Falls was
voted Most Improved; and the Most Valuable Player award went to
Washington.
Kirtland’s men’s team, which finished the season with an 8-7 record in the
MCCAA East (18-11 overall), also ranked 10th in the NJCAA for points,
averaging 91 per game, and 12th for its record at the three-point line,
shooting 37.48 percent. Kirtland’s Antonio Berry, although he played only
15 games during the 2004-2005 season, ranked 14th in the NJCAA for steals,
averaging 3.267 per game.
Kirtland is now preparing for its spring golf season, this year under the
new leadership of coach Ken McClusky of Gladwin.
