Kirtland Firebirds open CRAF Center to a little
‘Midnight Madness’
|
ROSCOMMON – Everyone is invited to
help get the Kirtland basketball season off to a spirited start by
taking part in the Firebirds’ annual “Midnight Madness” celebration; an
Oct. 1 workout that begins the minute after the month of September ends.
As always, the event is free and open to the public. Kirtland’s Lady
Firebirds – featuring at least nine Michigan players – will have an
intra-squad scrimmage at 12:01 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 1. The men’s team, a
squad of 19, featuring eight players from Northern Michigan, will hold
its scrimmage starting at about 12:55 a.m.
The games will take place on Kirtland’s home court, the CRAF Center,
located next to the court house in downtown Roscommon.
Oct. 1 is the first day that colleges can conduct organized basketball
practices. Until then, players get themselves into shape by running,
lifting weights and practicing during so-called “open-gym” workouts.
Entering her second season as coach of the Lady Firebirds is Teresa
Stuck, of Houghton Lake. In her first year as head coach, Stuck led her
team to a winning season – the first in the team’s five-year history –
ending the regular season with a 9-7 conference record (12-17 overall).
Returning to coach the men’s team is Glen Donahue, the winningest coach
in Michigan college basketball, entering his 49th season on the bench.
