Medical Laboratory Technician
Respiratory Care
Medical Laboratory Technician:
Medical Laboratory Technicians (MLT) perform laboratory analyses to help the
physician detect, diagnose and treat disease. Technicians work with
sophisticated laboratory instruments and computers that must be kept in optimal
operating condition to give the most accurate results. The volume and
sophistication of laboratory testing will increase as the population grows and
lives longer. Physicians base about 70 percent of their diagnosis and treatment
decisions on the results of laboratory testing.
Medical laboratory technicians work in such divisions of the medical
laboratory in the blood bank, clinical chemistry, microbiology, hematology,
serology and body fluid analysis under the supervision of the medical
technologists and the medical director.
The program combines classroom instruction and laboratory practice on-campus
with internships in hospitals throughout the state to prepare program graduates
to perform a wide range of tests.
The program is fully accredited by the National Accrediting Agency for
Clinical Laboratory Sciences.
Respiratory Care:
The Respiratory Care field offers challenge and mobility. Working as a member
of the health care team, you will participate in the diagnosis, treatment and
rehabilitation of patients with diseases of the heart and lungs. You will be
prepared to give patients both emergency and long-term life support in a
continually changing environment.
The curriculum is designed so that all lecture courses are delivered over the
internet. The laboratory courses meet on campus or at an off campus location.
During the laboratory sessions, students practice various therapies and with
different equipment as they develop their patient care skills in preparation for
the clinical internships.
The program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health
Education Programs in conjunction with the Committee on Accreditation for
Respiratory Care.

AAS in Radiography
The Radiography program is a collaborative program offered by an agreement
between Kirtland Community College and Mid Michigan Community College. The
program is designed to prepare graduates to function as members of the health
team in hospitals, clinics, government and military installations, industry, and
public health. In addition to classroom instruction and experience in the
laboratory, the student will receive on-the-job practical education in radiology
departments of local hospitals participating in the program.
The prerequisite and general education courses are taken at Kirtland
Community College and can be completed in one year. The second year will be
taken at Mid Michigan Community College. The third year will be a clinical
internship at area hospitals. Program graduates are eligible to take the
American Registry of Radiologic Technologists certification examination. Mid
Michigan Community College confers the associate degree.
The collaborative program has many benefits for students at Kirtland
including the following:
- Most general education and prerequisite courses can be taken at
Kirtland. HUM-200 must be taken at Mid Michigan Community College.
- Mid Michigan has a limited number of reserved seats for qualified
Kirtland students ready to be admitted into the program.
- Kirtland students who are accepted into the program and transfer to Mid
Michigan for their radiography courses will pay in-district tuition at Mid
Michigan.
- Kirtland students who are in the program and ready for their clinical
internship in a hospital will be assigned to an in-district hospital.
Students should contact those listed for specific program information.
