If you are 21 or older and haven’t earned a college degree yet, Michigan provides state-funded support to help you achieve your goals without taking on debt.

What Does the Michigan Reconnect Scholarship Cover?

Michigan Reconnect is designed to make higher education accessible and affordable. Here is a breakdown of what the scholarship pays for and what you need to know:

• In-District Tuition: If you live within Kirtland Community College’s tax district, Michigan Reconnect covers 100% of your tuition.
• Out-of-District Tuition Support: If you reside outside Kirtland’s tax district, Reconnect still covers the full in-district portion of tuition, resulting in a steep discount (around 50% or more off your overall tuition). You are responsible for paying the remaining difference, but you can stack federal financial aid, grant money, or local scholarships to cover the remaining costs.
• Mandatory Fees: Reconnect covers mandatory student fees assessed to all students.
• What’s Not Covered: Textbooks, course-specific supplies, and out-of-district tuition gaps are not covered directly by Reconnect. However, our Financial Aid team can help you find additional grants and scholarships to cover these expenses.

Eligibility Checklist

To qualify for Michigan Reconnect, you must meet the following criteria:

• Age: Be at least 21 years old.
• Residency: Have lived in Michigan continuously for at least one year (since July 1 of the previous calendar year).
• Education History: Hold a high school diploma, GED, or certificate of completion.
• Degree Status: Have not yet earned an associate or bachelor’s degree.

Step-by-Step Application Guide

For Applicants Aged 21+

1. File Your FAFSA: Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) at fafsa.gov and enter Kirtland Community College’s school code.
2. Apply to Kirtland: Submit your free application for admission to Kirtland Community College.
3. Apply for MI Reconnect: Submit your application on the official State of Michigan Reconnect portal.
